Our Sapphire hens are also known as: Emeralds/ Araucana Hybrid
Our littlest hens, although still classed as "large fowl", the Sapphire, are very attractive with quite an unusual look. They are predominantly white to pale grey in colour, often with black, grey or brown splashes. Their Araucana lineage means that many of these birds are "rumpless" in that they have no or very little tail. Some will also feature ear tuffs, beards or crests, giving them a very unique and slightly comical appearance. Our Sapphire hens have a 98% chance of laying a blue/green egg. Sapphires have a slight frame and are quite quick when young, but are also friendly birds with a gentle temperament and an inquisitive nature.
Sapphires will lay approximately 260-280 pretty blue coloured eggs per year. We have currently SOLD OUT of Sapphire hens, but there are some beautiful blue egg layers, such as the Devon Blue that can be reserved now for 2024 collection via Chickens To Your Door- just select Martins Wood Farm as your pick up point and choose "Paula @ Martins Wood Farm" as where you heard about them.
