Chicken Feed and Treats
Layers pellets is the staple food for chickens, containing all the key ingredients they need to lay well and live healthily. Layers Pellets should be made freely available to hens throughout the day in a suitable feeder, along with a fresh supply of water in a suitable drinker.
Corn is a great treat for our feathered friends, although all treats must be limited as your hens could become overweight and will not be as happy and healthy as they should be. A small handful of corn will encourage your hens to get to know you, but do wait until the afternoon so that all the girls have had their fill of Layers Pellets first. Other great treats for your girls include peck blocks, vegetable and herb mixes, poultry popcorn and more!

Hens require flint grit to help them break down their food as they don't have any teeth. he flint grit sits in the gizzard and grinds up the food. Naturally this will pass through their system and out with their droppings. Hens will help themselves to grit as and when they know they require it, so do have it available for them at all times.
A second type of grit that a hen needs is soluble oyster shell grit. This gives the girls extra calcium which will help their eggs to have lovely strong, smooth shells. Don't be surprised if you get the odd soft egg (without a shell) when your hen firsts begins laying. This is quite normal as it takes a few goes for her system to settle down. |
