​A cockerel really will make a fantastic addition to any flock and they will look after the hens very well indeed. They will be at the top of the pecking order, meaning there will be less squabbles among the girls! They are striking in both appearance and voice. Cockerels are not needed for hens to lay eggs but with a boy in the flock the eggs are very likely to be fertile and potentially hatch if incubated or sat on by a broody hen. As long as the eggs are not stored constantly at warm temperatures then the eggs will not hatch and are perfect for eating and cooking with as you would any other egg.

Cockerels make a fantastic sound, but will crow throughout the day, not just in the morning, so please do consider your neighbours before getting a cockerel.

We can take orders for male birds of many of the breeds we supply. We do not have them available routinely so please contact us if you would like a cockerel for your flock and we will do our best to offer the breed you are after.
