Sale of hens from Martins Wood Farm in 2021

What a strange time we continue to find ourselves in, both with Covid-19 and Avian Influenza to deal with. We have thoroughly looked into the advice from the Government for both these issues and have found that we are allowed to remain open and trading during this time. Firstly, in terms of Covid-19, we are allowed to trade due to the nature of our business coming under four permitted categories.

"Businesses providing essential goods and services can stay open. The full list of these businesses can be found in the guidance on closing certain businesses and venues in England, but includes:
  • essential retail such as food shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences
  • vets and retailers of products and food for the upkeep and welfare of animals
  • animal rescue centres, boarding facilities and animal groomers (may continue to be used for animal welfare, rather than aesthetic purposes)
  • agricultural supplies shops"

You are allowed to leave home during this National Lockdown to visit us as we are an essential business for the above permitted reasons, HOWEVER, we strongly urge people to consider if they feel this journey is necessary, and if so, only come to us if we are your local poultry supplier. Further advice can be found on the Government website here. Please also view our Covid-safe procedures on our home page.

In terms of Avian Influenza, the whole of England is in a Prevention Zone, but as we are not in a Protection Zone or a Surveillance Zone, we are allowed to sell our hens. We are not classed as a "gathering" as our hens are from one source and are only moving to your home. No additional hens will be mixing with our selling flock. Further details on what a Prevention Zone means and how to ensure your biosecurity measures will keep your birds safe can be found on our guidance page here.

Our hens are available by ADVANCED RESERVATION only.
Please contact us via our contact form or email only to reserve your hens.  Our reservation list for 2021 is now OPEN.

Hybrid hens are a great choice for novice and experienced chicken keepers alike. They are incredibly friendly, hardy and adaptable. Hybrid chickens have wonderfully inquisitive natures and will not fail to reward you with a constant supply of delicious fresh eggs. You will become very popular with family and friends once they have tried them! We have hens in an array of beautiful colours and breeds that can lay either light brown, speckled, dark brown, white and even blue eggs.

Our hens live in mixed outdoor pens in our beautiful woodland location and we pride ourselves on the condition, quality and welfare of our birds. They are raised to high welfare standards and we are happy to answer any questions you may have about the hens. We offer a lifetime of free chicken advice to go with your new family members!

Our Point of Lay (POL) hybrids are between 16-20 weeks old depending when in the month you come to see us and they usually begin laying between 20-24 weeks of age. A new flock of 16 week old hens are available every four weeks, from February to October. Also known as "pullets" at this age, our birds are sexed, so you won't get a cockerel unless you want one. We do not sell hens any younger than 16 weeks of age as they undergo a thorough 16 week vaccination programme protecting them against Marek's Disease, Newcastle's Disease, Salmonella, Coccidiosis, Mycoplasma and more.

When coming to collect your hens it is ideal if you can bring a pet carrier or a large cardboard box with you to transport your girls home in- please make sure it is a box that you don't mind us putting ventilation holes in! It is also a good idea to put some straw, shavings or newspaper in the bottom to keep your girls comfortable on their journey home. If you haven't got a suitable carrier then don't worry as we do have some boxes here. If there are particular breeds of hens that you are after then please call or email us to check our most up to date availability to avoid disappointment. If we have sold out of a particular breed we will have more 16 week old hens of all varieties available again within a couple of weeks. We want you to be very happy with your hens and will always aim to provide the best service we can. You can select the exact hens you want and if you require us to clip your hens' wing we will do so, and show you how to do it for future reference.

All of our hens are fully vaccinated as they undergo a thorough 16 week vaccination programme, the details of which can be found here. We recommend that once you get the girls home they are wormed on a regular basis, checked frequently for lice and mites and a red mite preventative cleaner is used in the coop.

Our girls come with a two week guarantee against health problems after sale. If you are concerned about any of your hens please contact us as soon as you can. We will be happy to exchange or replace hens that appear to have poor health within this time frame. This guarantee does not extend to protect hens against predators, such as a fox or dog, or any that escape from their new home. Although we have great belief in the quality of our birds we cannot guarantee them for longer as we have no control over the conditions they are in once they leave us, or any stress they may be exposed to.

We also supply our hens wholesale across East and West Sussex, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset and Devon. If you are a trader looking for a wholesale supplier of point of lay hybrid hens please contact us to discuss quantities and prices.

Martins Wood Farm is a no smoking site. We ask that children are supervised at all times as we are a working farm and there can be hazards around. It is very important that they do not wander off by themselves. Dogs must be kept on a lead and if they foul it is the owners responsibility to clean it up. If dogs are causing stress to the hens we will ask that they are kept in a ventilated car.
