If you're going on holiday and can't find anyone to look after your hens, then you can bring them to us for a little holiday of their own with our Holiday Hen Boarding!
One of our Rhode Rocks enjoying a dust bath in the sun
Guests stay in one of our dedicated Holiday Hen Pens. Upon arrival they will be shown to their secure accommodation which has been thoroughly cleaned out and made up with dust extracted wood shavings. There will be an all you can eat buffet of layer pellets and unlimited fresh drinking water waiting for them at the bar. The outside area has plenty of woodchip for the girls to scratch around in which has been sanitised between visitors.
Your girls will be looked after to the highest standard, with a safe, enclosed run to play in so we know where they are at all times, a clean dry house to sleep in, with perches and nest boxes to aid the enjoyment of their stay. All hens are kept in their own family groups and will not be mixed with other hens. The girls will get lots of attention and you are welcome to bring along any favourite treats you would like them to have. A high standard of cleanliness will be maintained during the hens' stay and they are housed in a shaded woodland area.
The hens will have a health check when they get here and if we see any problems we can treat them for you whilst they enjoy their holiday. If you are considering adding any hens to your flock we are happy to assist with the integration process while the hens are here.
All of the eggs your girls lay during their stay with us will be kept safely and given to you as a welcome home present.
The Holiday Hen Boarding Scheme began at MWF in 2011 when our first guests, Nancy and Gertrude, came to stay with us. This is what their owner, Janet, has to say about our service:
"We bought Gertrude and Nancy from Martins Wood Farm and when we went on holiday we thought 'Oh no what we will do with the girls?!' I rang Martins Wood to see if they had any sort of facility to look after our hens, they said they had been thinking of doing a 'boarding' service but hadn't actually set it up! So Gertrude and Nancy were the first residents of Holiday Hens! We were so grateful because Paula and co only had a couple of days notice from us, but the girls had a lovely house and penned area to stay, they were very well looked after and laid eggs every day which Paula kept for us when we got back! We have used the Holiday Hen service ever since and the girls love it!! I'm so proud to say that our girls were the first residents!! Long may it continue!! Well done Martins Wood Farm and keep up the good work!!"
Our service has grown and grown since then and we have had many guests come and stay with us. We have expanded our accommodation
to now include 8 dedicated houses and runs for our Holiday Hen Boarding Scheme, catering for flocks of all shapes and sizes, including large fowl, bantams and cockerels! We can look after you chickens whether you are away for short weekend or midweek break, or require hen boarding for an extended period of time.
Fiona bought her girls to stay with us for 3 months while she was relocating. Her feedback of our service was:
"Hello all at Martins Wood Farm, Wow...Please accept my complete gratitude for the care and attention you gave to my hens during their extended stay with you. They are happily settled in Nottingham now and to my great surprise were laying the very next day! You offer an excellent and caring service and I will be recommending you to all my hen-keeping buddies. Once again, thank you! Kind regards, Fiona"
The cost of Holiday Hen Boarding is £2.50 per bird per night plus VAT.
